Best First-Time Route

Take the 6 train to 68 St–Hunter College. Exit toward East 68th Street, walk 3 blocks west to Fifth Avenue, then 2 blocks north to East 70th Street. The Frick mansion entrance will be on your right.

From Central Park

If you’re already in Central Park, walk to the East 70th Street exit by Fifth Avenue. Cross Fifth Ave and walk half a block east—the Frick’s elegant Beaux-Arts façade is directly ahead.

Option 1 — From Midtown & Times Square

Useful if you’re staying near Times Square, Bryant Park, or Grand Central.

  • Subway via Q (fast + simple): From Times Sq–42 St, take the Q train uptown to 72 St. Walk west along 72nd Street toward Central Park, then turn left (south) on Fifth Avenue and walk to East 70th Street.
  • Subway via 6 train: Take any line to reach Lexington Avenue, then transfer to the 6 train and ride to 68 St–Hunter College. Walk west to Fifth Ave and north to East 70th Street.
  • From Grand Central: Ride the 6 train from Grand Central–42 St to 68 St–Hunter College, then walk as above.

Transit Payment

Use contactless OMNY (tap your card/phone) or a MetroCard. OMNY taps are capped daily, so multiple subway/bus rides won’t exceed the daily limit.

Option 2 — Subway & Buses (Most Common)

From Downtown / Lower Manhattan

Take 4/5/6 or N/Q/R/W uptown. Transfer to the 6 at Union Sq or Grand Central and exit at 68 St–Hunter College. Walk to Fifth Ave and up to East 70th Street.

Using Fifth & Madison Ave Buses

The M1, M2, M3, and M4 buses run along Fifth Ave (uptown) and Madison Ave (downtown). Get off near 70th Street and walk a short distance to the museum entrance.

From Other Museums on Museum Mile

Walking distance from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (about 8–10 minutes south along Fifth Ave) and close to other Museum Mile institutions—easy to combine in one day.

Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Many hop-on hop-off tours have stops along Upper East Side / Museum Mile. Check for the nearest stop to East 70th Street and walk to the Frick from there.

Wayfinding Tip

When in doubt, aim for Fifth Avenue by East 70th Street. The Frick’s limestone mansion stands on the east side of Fifth, just off the park.

Option 3 — Scenic Walks via Central Park & Museum Mile

Walking is one of the nicest ways to arrive at The Frick Collection. You’ll pass classic townhouses, leafy park views, and other major museums.

  • From Central Park South (59th St): Walk north along Fifth Avenue on the park side until you reach East 70th Street, then cross to the museum side. Expect about 10–15 minutes.
  • From the Met: Leave the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 82nd Street, walk south down Fifth Avenue along the park. The Frick is about 12 blocks south (15–20 minutes).

Photo Tip

Pause on Fifth Avenue opposite the Frick to capture the mansion with Central Park’s trees behind you—a classic Upper East Side shot.

From NYC Airports

JFK Airport

Take AirTrain JFK to Jamaica. From there, either: ride the E train toward Manhattan and transfer to the 6 or Q, or take the LIRR to Midtown (Grand Central / Penn) and continue by subway or taxi to the Upper East Side.

LaGuardia (LGA)

Use the Q70 SBS to Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Av, then the Q or 6 train toward Manhattan. Exit at 72 St (Q) or 68 St–Hunter College (6) and walk to the museum.

Taxis & Rideshares

Luggage

Large suitcases are not ideal—space is limited and you may be turned away at security. Use luggage storage near your hotel or transit hub before visiting.

Driving, Parking & Bikes

Driving

The Upper East Side has heavy traffic and limited curb space. If you must drive, allow extra time and expect slow movement along Fifth and Madison Avenues.

Parking

Use nearby paid garages along Madison, Lexington, or side streets in the East 60s–70s. Street parking is scarce and often time-limited—always check signs carefully.

Citi Bike

Several Citi Bike docks are within a few blocks of The Frick Collection. Park bikes only at official docks; riding is not allowed inside Central Park’s pedestrian paths near museum entrances.

Accessibility

The museum provides step-free access and elevator routes. If you use a wheelchair or have mobility needs, check the Frick’s official website or ask staff on arrival for the most convenient entrance and lifts.

Practical Visit Tips

Arrive a Little Early

Aim to arrive 15–20 minutes before your timed ticket slot to clear security, pick up audioguides, and use restrooms before starting your visit.

Smart casual is ideal for this Gilded Age mansion. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as you’ll be walking through galleries and up/down some interior stairs.
